18 - Mowing and Trimming Safety
Dont Get Caught in Moving Parts
Observe these precautions to prevent being caught in the equip-
ment’s moving parts.
1. Keep both hands and feet on the equipment at all times
(if applicable).
Never reach around or beneath a running mower or trimmer.
2. Never use a mower or trimmer without all shields and
guards in place.
Shields and guards protect you from being caught in moving
parts and should always be in place and undamaged when oper-
ating mowers and trimmers.
3. Never add blades or chains not recommended by the
manufacturer.
A blade or chain not specically designed for the equipment can
seriously injure or kill you. Refer to the operators manual for
recommended attachments.

An employee was operating a walk behind mower in a ditch. The
blades rear guard was bent up at the bottom, leaving a 2-inch
section exposed. The employee was backing the mower out of
the ditch when he was struck in the right eye with a piece of glass.
Never operate a mower or trimmer with a damaged
guard. Always wear eye protection.
